Abstract
This data set includes time series of ocean currents, temperature, and salinity from moored instruments from the Jan Mayen Channel at a depth of 1585 meters, collected as part of the Northern Ocean Rapid Surface Evolution (NORSE) experiment. NORSE is an Office of Naval Research Departmental Research Initiative focusing on characterizing the key physical parameters and processes that govern the predictability of upper-ocean rapid evolution events occurring in high latitudes. The Jan Mayen Channel mooring is one of four moored deployments in NORSE. The other moorings include a pair across the channel, forming an acoustic observation system, and another oceanographic mooring on the Jan Mayen Ridge. The measurement period covers from October 26, 2022, to November 19, 2023. The material following the data set includes: 1) Instrument-specific netCDF data files: one file per instrument for current profilers and current meters, (RDI300_17319.nc, RDI75_18447.nc, S100_100756.nc, S55_200067.nc, SG_1050.nc and SG_1898.nc), including time series of measured variables, including quality control parameters and auxiliary sensor data; and one merged file for all Sea Bird instruments with time series from all temperature, conductivity, and pressure recorders (SBE_CTPrecorders.nc). 2) One gridded netCDF data file for the entire mooring, including hourly-averaged ocean temperature, salinity, and currents on a 5-meter vertical grid. For reference, this data file also includes hourly-averaged records of depth and measured variables at time-variable measurement levels. 3) A data report with details on the mooring instrumentation, construction and instrument set-up, data processing and quality control, as well as overview figures of the data collected. 4) A compressed folder with sub-directories for all instruments including the native instrument raw data files, their converted/exported versions using the manufacturer's software as well as set-up and configuration files. Each data file is named clearly with the instrument type and its serial number. The user is referred to the comments in the data file and the data report for specific details. The Norwegian contribution to the NORSE program was supported by the Office of Naval Research Global, award number N62909-22-1-2023.
